Equitable Education Policy
If I ran the world, the first thing I’d do is fix the United States’ Education System. Keep in mind, I went to public school from kindergarten all the way through my masters degree in social work, so I am on “Team Public Schools” all the way!. Public schools have the ability to be these amazing beacons of learning, but as a country we are dropping the ball on educating the next generations. We have fallen behind in everything from math to science to foreign language, and our test scores show it. They also show how “teaching to the test” is a necessity in some places, and it really dampens the learning that can happen at schools across the country. Imagine if we taught kids how to discover the world for themselves and learn how to be good humans.
Pretty sure everything I am proposing here will take a long time to get going, or would it? I know during the Trump administration nothing will get done on it because he closed the Department of Education down. There is a lot of f*cked up sh*t going on right now and I am extremely pissed that the education of our youth is not a priority to literally the President or any of our Congresspeople, or the Courts. Stand up, y’all! This isn’t a drill!
I’d LOVE the opinions of educators, so if anyone wants to comment on the post (if you can, I have to fix this blog so there can be comments lol), and if not, you can always email me at laura@rudemillennial.com with a comment. (Be nice, I’m a bit new at this.)
Dismantle White Supremacy in the entire Education System-Let’s dismantle the white supremacy that is still very prevalent in our school systems. 90% of teachers are white women and they tend to be a little racist. Black kids get punished at rates much higher than white kids, so let’s quit pretending there isn’t racism there. Let’s train our teachers to be antiracists!
A Federal Education Tax-Let’s just nix the whole “property taxes pay for education” thing and instead, let’s levy a federal tax, that allows for the equal distribution of funding for schools throughout the country. Let’s make education an equal playing field. Hey, it’s an extra tax for the public or we can cut fraudulent military spending…up to you! If you’d rather do that, contact your Congressperson and Senators.
FREE COLLEGE AND TRADE SCHOOL-Every institution of higher learning, which includes colleges and universities and trade schools, will be FREE. Period. You want to expand your education after high school? Go for it! Study whatever you want. If you are addicted to taking classes, you will eventually have to pay a small fee.
Give Schools Resources-Each school will have all the resources it needs and no teacher will ever have to buy school supplies for various projects out of their own pockets every year.
An Amazing Library for Every School-Every school would have a rocking library, okay? Books galore!
KEEP the Arts and Sciences-STEM, MUSIC, ART, and other creative interests should be encouraged because well-rounded kids makes well-rounded adults. And studies have shown that music helps with mathematics and creative thinking.
Mandatory Year-Long Government and Civics/Consumer Education Class for High Schoolers-I propose this to happen during junior or senior year, as students near the voting age. This education must be NONPARTISAN. Let them figure out for themselves where they stand on the issues.
AP Classes Available to Every High School-Every high school would be able offer AP classes that can transfer to college credit, even if it has to be virtually for the time-being.
Pay educators much more!-All of them should at minimum no matter where they are geographically make $70,000 per year. That number better go up too.
Some questions…What do you wish your school had that it doesn’t? What is the most challenging part of trying to get an education these days? How cost-prohibitive is higher education? I know it’s bad, but not sure how bad. Catastrophic?
Stay rude, my friends!
